A carbon footprint is historically defined as the total set of greenhouse gas emissions caused by an individual, event, organisation, or product, expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent.
Many of our daily activities - such as using electricity, driving a car, or disposing of waste - cause greenhouse gas emissions. Together these emissions make up a household's carbon footprint.

It is important to try a reduce your carbon footprint because carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gases play an important role in helping the earth trap and retain heat for life as we know it, however, too much carbon dioxide in our atmosphere could lead to overall warming of our climate.
